Playbook Engineering Review

5.4/10

UK-only sportsbook and casino stack for independent bookmakers: five client brands each on their own UKGC license, with managed trading, compliance, and support, a supplier license held since 2018, four host licenses added May 1, 2025, and a £250,000 penalty and license surrender behind the group operator in November 2025.

Our take

UK independent bookmakers are the buyer here. Five racing-led brands run their own UKGC licenses on Playbook's stack. The supplier entity has been licensed since 2018, and its pure-B2B rebuild ran brand by brand from July 2024, with the host licenses live six months before the group operator took a £250,000 penalty and a formal warning in November 2025 and surrendered all six of its licenses. The license umbrella that once defined the offer is gone, so every brand brings its own operating license.

Our read

Strengths
  • Five UK bookmaker brands run on Playbook technology, each holding its own UKGC license: BresBet, Planet Sport Bet, AK Bets, BetWright, and DragonBet, a racing-led cluster that stayed live through the group's 2025 restructure.
  • Client brands re-licensed one by one from July 2024 and the host rails went live in May 2025, six months before the operator entity surrendered its licenses.
Watch-outs
  • The group's operator entity took a £250,000 penalty plus a formal warning under section 117(1)(a) on November 10, 2025 for AML, customer-interaction, and customer-identification failings (August 2023 to August 2024), then surrendered all six licenses nine days later. The supplier entity is that operator's parent company.
  • The license umbrella that built the client base no longer exists: since November 19, 2025 every new brand needs its own UKGC operating license before launch, which removes the historical fast route.
  • BetZone re-licensed under Richmond Atlantic (December 2024) and relaunched on Metric Gaming and GiG in April 2025, while rhino.bet and yeeehaaa.bet ended with no Playbook successor.
Best for

UK independent and racing-led bookmakers, on-course books going online included, that hold or will obtain their own UKGC operating license and want the stack plus trading, compliance, and support run for them.

Not for

Anyone who needs a license umbrella (dead since November 19, 2025), operators targeting any market outside the UK, and tier-1 volume books.

Markets & licensing

Playbook Engineering Limited holds UKGC account 49787: Remote Gambling Software since February 2018, plus four host licenses added May 1, 2025. Group operator Playbook Gaming Limited surrendered all six of its licenses effective November 19, 2025, nine days after a £250,000 penalty. Nothing exists outside the UK.

United States
Nothing on the map

No US state registration, certification, or filing exists for Playbook Engineering, and the company is licensed in the UK only. US-facing operators need another supplier, and OpenBet, Kambi, and Amelco cover that market.

United Kingdom
UKGC-licensed supplier

Since Playbook Gaming's surrender took effect on November 19, 2025 there is no license umbrella, so every brand launches on its own UKGC operating license with Playbook behind it as supplier.

The history

Longevity in this industry usually comes with a change of owner somewhere in it.

The company was incorporated in December 2016 as Two-Up Digital Ltd and took the Playbook Engineering name in early 2021, running from Unit 2 Platform at London Victoria station with the engineering weight in Kraków. For seven years the group ran a two-entity model: Playbook Engineering held the UKGC software license (active February 2018) while subsidiary Playbook Gaming held operator licenses from January 2018 and hosted third-party brands under them, the umbrella that domains like betzone.co.uk, bresbet.com, and dragonbet.co.uk launched on. That model came apart from July 2024, brand by brand, with host licenses added to the supplier account in May 2025, before the UKGC's £250,000 penalty landed on the operator entity that November and all six of its licenses were surrendered. What remains is a pure B2B supplier of roughly 102 people, majority-owned by Star Racing Ltd, the company behind the Star Sports bookmaker.

Milestones

  1. Incorporated in London as Two-Up Digital Ltd in December.

  2. The two-entity model goes live: Playbook Gaming's betting licenses start January 31 and the Remote Gambling Software license on account 49787 activates February 13.

  3. The company becomes Playbook Engineering (early 2021), and the operator entity adds virtual-event betting to the umbrella in June.

  4. The staged exit from the umbrella begins: DragonBet Ltd licensed July 31, Onyx Gaming (BetWright) November 18, and Richmond Atlantic (BetZone's new home) December 9.

  5. BresBet (February), AK Bets and Planet Bet (March), and the host licenses on 49787 (May 1) complete the B2B rails, BetZone relaunches on Metric Gaming and GiG (April), then the UKGC issues the £250,000 penalty and formal warning (November 10) and Playbook Gaming surrenders all six licenses (effective November 19).

Longevity and ownership

Switching vendors is expensive, which makes the company's staying power part of the purchase. What the contract says about your data decides how expensive an exit gets.
