Like any marketing channel, affiliate campaigns require ongoing optimization and updates to maintain peak performance as tactics mature and competition grows. But optimization is a broad term, and there are many ways to address performance nuances and issues.
Don’t make sudden changes, figure out what’s actually causing the drop, and fix one thing at a time. To make it easier, here’s a practical guide from A.W. Empire on the most common reasons why performance tanks and how to get your campaigns back on track.
At the very beginning, nail down the source of drops. Because your funnel might generate less traffic or fewer conversions. These are completely different problems, and treating them the same way is one of the most common (and expensive) mistakes.
If traffic volume went down, the issue is probably on the acquisition side: sources, delivery problems, account flags, or ad platform changes.
If volume is stable but conversions tanked, the problem is inside the funnel: creatives, offer relevance, landing page experience, tracking errors, or shifts in user behavior.
After that, break down your traffic source by source. Drops often hit only specific channels or zones, unless there’s been an issue with the offer. Looking at the data this way helps you pinpoint exactly where things went wrong rather than guessing.
Having been in the market for more than two decades, we’ve compiled a checklist with the most common causes of performance drops. If you have an issue, it might be related to the following:
Tracking issues. Check if anything changed in your tracker, postbacks, or Promo Tool links. One wrong parameter might make your numbers look terrible, while the traffic flow itself is fine. That’s why we encourage you to take one step at a time and not rush things up to avoid breaking what’s actually working.
More recent changes. Did you add a new offer, creative, or zone right before the drop? Well, give your tests enough time to gather sufficient data, a.k.a., statistically significant.
Seasonal and external factors. Compare your current numbers with the same period last year. Holidays, major sports events, algorithm updates, or even competitor activity can cause normal fluctuations. If you haven’t yet, start keeping a performance log; you’ll thank yourself next year.
Rebills and returning users. High-value returning users and rebills can make up a big part of revenue, especially when working with cams. A drop in loyal users can hurt your numbers, even if raw traffic stays stable. Keep going and catch the whales (big spenders).
Creative fatigue and ad burnout. When users see the same creatives and ad formats for too long, they might stop responding. You can try A/B testing different variations of a creative in the same ad format, or you can opt for a new Promo Tool. These changes don’t have to be big, but something new is needed to keep visuals fresh.
Offer or landing page problems. Sometimes a generic offer loses appeal, or the landing page stops converting. Test new approaches and refresh landing pages regularly.
The golden rule of affiliate marketing and beyond. Changing one variable at a time is a great way to track your progress. If you’ve pinpointed the likely cause of your performance drop, you don’t need to spray and pray. Changing everything at once makes it impossible to know exactly what worked.
