Paysafe Review

7.2/10

NYSE-listed gambling-payments group tracing to Netbanx (1996) and Neteller (1999), running cards, wallets, eCash, Pay by Bank, and a crypto on-ramp behind a single API.

Our take

Paysafe owns its card gateway, the Skrill and Neteller wallets, the paysafecard and Paysafecash eCash network, and US Pay by Bank, all behind one API, with a client list that includes DraftKings since 2013 and Caesars since 2012. One high-risk merchant's chargebacks forced a Q3 2025 provision and guidance cut that dropped the stock 27.6% in a day, on top of a $182.5M FY2025 net loss and $2.4B of net debt.

Our read

Strengths
  • Owns every method layer operators actually want: cards, two wallets, an eCash network, and Pay by Bank behind one API, at 250+ methods, 120+ countries, and 40+ currencies.
  • Neteller has run bettor payments since 1999, and EGR North America named Paysafe Payments Provider of the Year four straight times, 2021 through 2024.
  • Three UK FCA EMIs (FRNs 900001, 900015, 900021), two Irish CBI entities (626665, 626671), a FinCEN MSB with state MTLs, and Canadian FINTRAC registrations.
  • Pay by Bank launched April 2024 and Pay with Crypto with stablecoin operator settlement followed in April 2026.
  • Developer docs, an open sandbox, and SDKs across six server languages plus iOS and Android.
Watch-outs
  • The balance sheet is a turnaround story: FY2025 closed at a $182.5M net loss with net debt of $2.4B near 5.6x adjusted EBITDA, and the Q1 2026 net loss widened to $36.5M even as guidance held.
  • A chargeback provision for a single high-risk merchant cut guidance in November 2025 and dropped the stock 27.6% in one day.
  • Wallet UX, verification flows, and fee policy on Skrill and Neteller sit with Paysafe rather than the operator, so cashier conversion rides on consumer products the operator cannot tune.
  • US card acquiring traces to the 2018 Worldpay partnership, and Global Payments closed on Worldpay in January 2026. Pricing, reserves, and settlement terms are set per deal.
Best for

Regulated-market operators (US state-licensed, Ontario, UK and EEA) that want cards, the wallet and eCash brands players already hold, payouts, and affiliate tech from a single vendor with two decades of gambling record.

Not for

Crypto-first or offshore brands that want a licensed CASP rail rather than a rented MoonPay one, buyers who need published pricing and settlement terms, and anyone unwilling to underwrite a levered turnaround.

Where you can run it

Markets & licensing

Paysafe's license stack runs on five e-money entities: three UK FCA institutions (FRNs 900001, 900015, 900021) and two Irish CBI entities (626665, 626671), alongside a FinCEN MSB, Canadian FINTRAC registrations, and a Swiss SRO affiliation, with Skrill holding an MLRs cryptoasset registration on top. On the US gaming side the footprint is 75% of operators across 33 jurisdictions.

How it connects

Integrations & engineering

One contract and one API instead of a separate deal per studio, feed, or PSP. Here's what connects, how fast, and on what stack.

One unified API

One integration into the Paysafe Gateway opens the stack: card processing, Skrill and Neteller, paysafecard and Paysafecash, ACH and Pay by Bank, and payouts. Operators integrate through the REST Payments API with the hosted Checkout overlay or Paysafe JS embedded fields, and the risk services ride the same connection. In US iGaming the 2018 arrangement had Worldpay handling credit-card processing and fast funds behind Paysafe's single point of integration.

Time to integrate

The public sandbox at merchant.test.paysafe.com lets engineers scope the build before contracting, while merchant underwriting on high-risk MCC codes sets the calendar.

The history

Longevity in this industry usually comes with a change of owner somewhere in it.

The lineage starts with Netbanx in 1996 and Neteller in 1999, the Calgary-born wallet that IPO'd on the LSE in 2004, then exited the US market in January 2007 as UIGEA reshaped the industry. The group rebuilt as Neovia, then Optimal Payments, bought Skrill and paysafecard for about EUR 1.1B in 2015 and took the Paysafe name, went private under Blackstone and CVC in 2017 for GBP 2.96B, and returned to public markets in March 2021 via Bill Foley's Foley Trasimene SPAC on the NYSE at a roughly $9B valuation. Since 2022 it has been run by CEO Bruce Lowthers through a deleveraging turnaround.

Milestones

  1. Netbanx founded (1996), Optimal Payments (1997), and Neteller (1999), the wallet that becomes the payments backbone of early online gambling.

  2. Neteller IPOs on the LSE (2004), then exits the US market in January 2007 as UIGEA reshapes online gambling payments.

  3. Renamed via Neovia to Optimal Payments (2011), acquires the Skrill group including paysafecard for about EUR 1.1B (2015), and rebrands as Paysafe Group.

  4. Blackstone and CVC take Paysafe private for GBP 2.96B in December 2017. iPayment is acquired and the exclusive Worldpay partnership for US iGaming card processing signs in November 2018.

  5. Back on public markets March 31 via the ~$9B Foley Trasimene SPAC merger (NYSE: PSFE). WynnBET signs, Zak Cutler joins to run North America iGaming, and the EGR North America Payments Provider win streak begins.

  6. Bruce Lowthers becomes CEO (May 2022). Ontario launch, SafetyPay and PagoEfectivo close, and the US footprint extends through Betr and the Massachusetts launches with DraftKings and Caesars (27 jurisdictions by Jul 2023).

  7. Pay by Bank launches for US iGaming (Apr 29) alongside the 75%-of-operators, 33-jurisdiction footprint. EGR B2B Gold for Payments Company of the Year, and the GiG partnership follows (Oct).

  8. Q3 report (Nov 12) discloses a $13.2M chargeback provision for a single high-risk merchant and cuts guidance, the stock falls 27.6% the next day, and the direct-marketing disposal completes ($99.1M revenue headwind).

  9. FY2025 lands at a $182.5M net loss (Mar 3). Pay with Crypto launches via MoonPay (Apr 7). Q1 repays $104.3M of debt targeting sub-5x leverage by year-end.
