Worldpay Review

7.5/10

Principal card acquiring in 174 countries, with a dedicated gaming unit processing for 200+ operators, bet365, DraftKings, and FanDuel among them, now owned by Global Payments after a $24.25B deal that closed January 9, 2026.

Our take

An operator buys principal card acquiring across 174 countries and 138 processing currencies, gaming registrations in Pennsylvania and Colorado, payout rails from RTP and Visa Direct to Aeropay's 24/7 pay-by-bank, and a gaming unit whose clients include bet365, DraftKings, Entain, Evoke, FanDuel, and Flutter. Global Payments closed its $24.25B purchase on January 9, 2026 and is folding Worldpay into one company, so a contract signed now is with a business mid-integration and in its fourth ownership structure in eight years. Gaming pricing is negotiated per deal.

Our read

Strengths
  • State licensing footprint: Pennsylvania Registered Gaming Service Provider valid to October 2029, plus a Colorado vendor license and launch-readiness work in Massachusetts and Iowa.
  • Full-stack player payouts: RTP, ACH, Interac, wire, Visa Direct, and Mastercard MoneySend, extended by Aeropay's 24/7 instant A2A withdrawals live in 2025.
  • An in-house risk stack built for MCC 7995: FraudSight machine learning with promo-abuse coverage, a Dispute Management suite, OmniToken tokenization, and jurisdiction-aware card blocking per state statute.
  • Counterparty scale: 55B+ annual transactions as a standalone company, now inside NYSE-listed Global Payments with $3.7T in pro forma payment volume.
Watch-outs
  • Fourth ownership structure in eight years: Vantiv merger 2018, FIS 2019, GTCR majority January 2024, and Global Payments closing January 9, 2026, with no announced timeline for the Worldpay brand's future.
  • Integration risk: the merger carries a $600M annual cost-synergy target, and the gaming unit sits inside a business being folded into Global Payments.
  • No integration timeline, KYB turnaround, or gaming SLA is published.
Best for

Enterprise-scale sportsbooks and iCasinos holding US state licenses, including tribal digital operators, plus large UKGC and EU-listed brands and land-based casinos that want omnichannel card acquiring and instant payouts from a tier-1 acquirer.

Not for

Offshore, Curacao-licensed, or crypto-first casinos (the acceptance posture is regulated-market only), startups without volume facing an enterprise sales cycle, and anyone needing crypto acceptance rather than payout-side stablecoins.

Markets & licensing

Worldpay acquires on authorizations it holds itself in the US, the UK, and the Netherlands. Its US gaming registrations, in Pennsylvania and Colorado, sit on top of those.

How it connects

Integrations & engineering

One contract and one API instead of a separate deal per studio, feed, or PSP. Here's what connects, how fast, and on what stack.

One unified API

Direct integration runs through the Access platform's REST APIs on the developer hub, with the legacy WPG gateway and separate payfac and dynamic-payout docs still maintained. Gaming operators already on one of the six connected platforms can shortcut through that connector. Acquiring, payouts, FraudSight, Disputes, tokenization, and 3DS all sit on the same stack, and hosted payment pages cover operators that want less PCI scope. Payout rails (RTP, Visa Direct, MoneySend, Aeropay A2A) attach to the same relationship.

Time to integrate

Timing is set by the enterprise sales cycle and MCC 7995 merchant underwriting.

Everything hangs off principal card acquiring: a payouts platform that reaches RTP, Visa Direct, and Mastercard MoneySend, an in-house fraud and dispute stack tuned for MCC 7995, and a public developer hub with a sandbox.

Track record

The history

Longevity in this industry usually comes with a change of owner somewhere in it.

The modern Worldpay dates to the 2018 merger with Vantiv, which kept the Worldpay name and the Cincinnati headquarters. FIS bought the company in 2019 for about $43B, then sold 55% to GTCR in a carve-out that closed January 31, 2024 and recreated a standalone Worldpay. Global Payments completed its $24.25B acquisition on January 9, 2026 and announced the close on January 12, making GPN the fourth ownership structure in eight years. The gambling business runs as a dedicated unit, Worldpay Gaming Solutions, under president Joseph Watkins.
